How To Check Brake Fluid

Regular spot checks of your brakes will go a long way towards preserving the integrity and value of your new Hyundai. What is Brake Fluid?

Before you learn how to check brake fluid, it is a good idea to understand what it is and the role it plays in keeping you safe. Brake fluid is a hydraulic fluid that aids in the movements your brake pedal makes. It offers an added benefit of providing lubrication for the braking system and helps fight corrosion. In most vehicles, brake fluid is glycol-ether based, but there are also silicone-based (DOT-5) and mineral oil-based (LHM) fluids available. Your owner’s manual will indicate what type of brake fluid your model uses.

3 Steps to Check Brake Fluid

  1. Pop the hood and check the master cylinder to locate your vehicle’s brake fluid reservoir. Your owner’s manual can direct you to the exact location.
  2. Look for “minimum” and “maximum” line indicators on the outside of the reservoir. Compare your brake fluid against these lines. If your fluid is closer to the minimum line, you should visit our service center near Big Timber for maintenance soon.
  3. Note the color of your brake fluid. If the fluid has turned dark brown or black or has an appearance similar to oil, you’ll need a brake fluid flush.

What Color is Brake Fluid Normally?

What color is brake fluid? New brake fluid should be almost clear with a slight yellow tint. As you use your braking system, this color will naturally change over time. Dark, oil-like brake fluid means the fluid has picked up contaminants and could affect the performance of your brakes if left unattended.

Brake Fluid Service Intervals

If you want to maintain your safety on your daily commute through Livingston, you should request your brake fluid be checked with every oil change, or at a minimum once a year. Brake fluid can last roughly four to five years, but this depends on a number of factors including the car, driving environment, and driver habits. When you schedule service with us, we will be sure to check the status of your brake fluid to ensure your ride is up to snuff.
